Your participation is voluntary. If you don’t wish to take part, you don’t have to. If you begin participating, you can also stop at any time.
What is this research about?
This research explores Melbourne-based Chinese international students’ experience with racism and how their universities handle their complaints. As the largest cohort of international students in Australia, Chinese students typify the experience of microaggression and structural racism in a university setting.
What will I be asked to do?
The project will gather Chinese international students’ experience of reporting racism and their perspective of the process and the way universities handled their complaints. Should you agree to participate in the research, you will participate in a focus group to share your experience with racism and reporting racism in a university setting.
The focus group will be conducted (face-to-face, Zoom or, phone) with two members of the research team. Physical meetings will strictly follow the Victorian health authority’s public health advice. Each focus group will take 60-90 minutes and be recorded with your permission for a systematic analysis.
What are the possible benefits?
The research will offer participants a chance to share and put forward their perspectives about the university’s approach and procedure of handling racism faced by international students. The expected findings will inform the production of a resource toolkit to help universities to develop accessible reporting mechanisms and a fairer and more transparent approach to respond to racism complaints. The research will benefit the broader community by providing knowledge that will underpin future resource allocation and service design to create a safer and more inclusive campus environment.
What are the possible risks?
Possible risks of participating in the research might include triggering negative feelings on aspects in life, and a certain degree of stress. For this reason, safeguards and precautions have been developed to minimize these risks.
In order to make you feel more comfortable, the interview and focus groups adopt an interactive and conversational format. If any questions make you feel uncomfortable, you do not need to answer.
Do I have to take part?
No. Participation is completely voluntary. You are able to withdraw at any time prior to, during and, after your participation.
Will I hear about the results of this project?
Research outputs in reputable non-academic and academic publication outlets will be made available to members and community organisations who are interested in them by contacting the researchers.
What will happen to information about me?
The information will be stored will be stored at the University of Melbourne. All electronic files will be secured on password-protected hard drives on the University’s OneDrive (cloud) storage system and the university computer. Only the chief investigator and the research assistant will have access to the data.
Is there any potential conflict of interest?
There is no conflict of interest to be declared.

2. I understand that the purpose of this research is to investigate experiences of racism at university among Chinese international students and to improve how the university handles complaints.
3. I understand that my participation in this project is for research purposes only.
4. I acknowledge that the possible effects of participating in this research project have been explained to my satisfaction.
5. The researchers have explained where and how to get assistance if participating in this research adversely affects me.
6. I will participate the focus group with two of the researchers.
7. I understand that the focus group may be audio recorded.
8. I understand that my participation is voluntary and that I am free to withdraw from this project anytime before the publication of research outputs, without explanation or prejudice and to withdraw any unprocessed data that I have provided.
9. I understand that the data from this research will be stored at the University of Melbourne for up to five years.
10. I have been informed that the confidentiality of the information I provide will be safeguarded subject to any legal requirements; my data will be password protected and accessible only by the named researchers.
